Is it still worth getting married in Jasper after the wildfires?

The recent 2024 wildfires in Jasper have been devastating for many, including many Jasperites who have lost their homes and businesses. And it may have you reconsidering your upcoming plans for your wedding destination.

There are a lot of factors to consider, and the long and short of it, is that our little mountain town is always worthwhile to come to! But you need to consider whether it will be feasible to currently support your wedding.

When tourists are allowed back to Jasper (at time of writing, only Jasper residents are allowed back into the park and town), there will be limited venue spaces, hotels, and restaurants operating. Some key areas were untouched by the fires (eg. Pyramid Lake Hotel and venue space, Pyramid Island), however others are no longer standing completely (Maligne Canyon Wilderness Lodge). The park’s usual rule that any weddings under 20 people are allowed anywhere in the park will still stand as long as you do not disturb the nature and wildlife, which means you can still hold your wedding anywhere in the park. Ceremony spaces are plentiful!

If you are hoping for a reception area or ceremony space for a larger wedding, here are some places you might want to consider when things reopen:

  • Jasper Park Lodge

  • Becker’s Chalets

  • Pyramid Lake Lodge

  • Maligne Lake Chalet (does not have any overnight lodging nearby)

Like I mentioned previously, there are plenty of ceremony locations if you are just wanting to have a small ceremony and go different locations for photos, and maybe have an intimate meal somewhere in town.

There are still the two day use areas:

  • Athabasca Day Use

  • Pyramid Island Day Use

As well as many locations you can just stop and find a nice place to hold a ceremony (with some limitations, as listed on the Parks Canada Website).

While there might be a lot of destruction from the wildfire, ultimately it will provide a very unique landscape to have your wedding photographs in when safe! Also, to help rebuild our small mountain town, tourism will be needed, so please don’t avoid coming back!

The long and short of it is, if you are still planning on a small, intimate wedding, Jasper can be the perfect place to do so.

And if you are still looking for other options than Jasper, check out this post!
